There are plenty of ESP32-powered handhelds in the maker scene, but Pocketbyte stands out for two reasons: who's building it, and how far he's taken it. The project comes from Om, a 16-year-old maker from Toronto who's been tinkering with electronics for just over six years and Pocketbyte is quickly becoming one of the more polished solo hardware efforts we've seen from a young creator.

What Pocketbyte actually is
Pocketbyte was designed as a part PDA, part game console, part music player, all built around an ESP32-S3. The specs punch above the usual hobbyist-board weight class:

Software-wise, it runs retro emulation from SNES to Sega Genesis, plays DOOM, Quake, and even has a PICO-8 port of Celeste running natively. There's also a built-in app store for downloading community-made games and apps over Wi-Fi, an MP3/WAV music player with cover art support, and a text editor that can sync notes to Notion, Obsidian, or a custom REST endpoint.

Modularity and Customization
The PocketByte is special in the fact that it has a swappable input system. The bottom half of the device detaches via magnets and pogo pins, letting you snap on a gamepad module, a BlackBerry-style QWERTY keyboard, a breadboard module for prototyping, or even an iPod-style click wheel. Om is positioning it as the first handheld with a system like this, and it's a genuinely clever way to let one core board serve as a gaming device, note-taking tool, or an MP3 media device.
Open Source, with a Caveat
The firmware and C library (built on ESP-IDF and FreeRTOS) are open source under Apache 2.0 and live on GitHub, alongside the app store code and published expansion-port specs. That's a real commitment to the customization angle that anyone can write their own apps or design new modules for the expansion bay. The one asterisk: hardware design files aren't public yet, so this is open-source software on (for now) closed hardware.

Pocketbyte is currently in DevKit stage, with pre-orders opening this summer at an expected $70–$100 price range. Om has been documenting the build process on YouTube, covering everything from the music player implementation to the Celeste port, and running an active Discord and subreddit for the community testing and shaping the product ahead of launch.
For a solo project from a teenager, the scope here (custom firmware, a functioning app store, a modular hardware interface, and a real go-to-market plan) is well beyond what you'd expect from a typical maker side project. Worth keeping an eye on as DevKits start shipping.
